Strains and Sprains

Overview
Strains and sprains occur when your body moves too fast and for too long, joints get twisted, or muscles being under repetitive stress. A strain involves overstretched or torn muscles or tendons; a sprain affects the ligaments around joints, like ankles, knees, or wrists.
Even once the swelling settles, you may still feel tightness, stiffness, or weakness in the area. That is where proper remedial massage treatment plays an important role in releasing the protective tension around the joints, improving circulation in both the injured area and its surrounding muscles, and restoring the joint's full range of movement.
They are common household and sports injuries. But here at North Hobart Massage, we are equipped with the right knowledge to help alleviate these kinds of injuries.
During the session
- We begin by identifying where along the body is being guarded. That may not necessarily be at the injured site, but potentially at nearby muscles that are likely compensating for the issue, for example, when the muscles around the hips and calves get tight after an ankle sprain, or when the upper back and traps tense up right after a shoulder injury.
- We use a combination of slow tissue release, joint-friendly techniques, and active feedback to rebuild muscular integrity without overstimulation. Our technique is not about "pushing into pain", it is about resetting your body’s safety signals (muscle guarding) and building resilience from the inside-out.
Treatment Recommendations
We offer 30, 60, and 90-minute remedial treatment sessions, chosen based on your condition:
- 30 minutes: For localised tension following minor sprains or strains.
- 60 minutes: Most commonly recommended-allows for assessment, release, and rebalancing.
- 90 minutes: Ideal for complex, multi-joint compensation (e.g. foot sprain → hip/pelvis overload).
In most cases, we recommend weekly sessions for 2–4 weeks, adjusted based on ryour rate of recovery and functional goals.
